May 05, 2015 - June 05, 2015
Bogota, Carrera 16 # 86A-31

Beatriz Esguerra Art has the pleasure of presenting photographers Mario Arroyave and Dean West in her gallery as part of Bogotá’s International Photography Biennial, Fotográfica 2015, which takes as its theme constructed photography. Colombian photographer Mario Arroyave will show his works alongside Australian photographer Dean West, international guest of the biennial. The power of manipulation in the contemporary world is a common theme that unites these two artists. Both create photographs that appear to be realities, but are instead constructions created thanks to technology. Through an exercise of observation, Mario Arroyave captures movements over a prolonged period of time and synthesizes these into what appears to be one coherent image of perfection. Ripples of time and space collide in order to present the viewer with an alternate reality that could never truly exist; yet our eyes and idealization of the world tricks us into believing that it does. Dean West creates works that distort the reality of any particular identity, thus exposing elements of the construction of cultural identity itself. From a distance the image appears entirely photographic, however upon close inspection its brick by brick fabrication is revealed. His scenes are impeccable, and give off a strange feeling of aloofness and displacement, referring to society’s search for the ideal in our contemporary world.

Dean West, one of the world’s best emerging photographers, (according to After Capture Magazine), has a highly conceptual and thought-provoking style of contemporary portraiture. His body of work has been featured in top photography magazines, art galleries, and received numerous international awards. Born in small-town rural Australia in 1983, Dean’s love for photography began in his high school darkroom and blossomed at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia. In 2008, West was included in Saatchi & Saatchi’s collection of the world’s top 100 emerging photographers and went on to win Advertising Photographer of the Year at the International Aperture Awards. In 2009, he was the winner of the IV International Arte Laguna Price, Venice, Italy.

Mario Arroyave was born in 1983 in El Espinal, Colombia. He studied Systems Engineering at the Latin University of Costa Rica, and then Publicity at the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in Bogotá, finishing his studies with a period in Buenos Aires focused upon cinematography. Basing his work in both photography and video, Arroyave is an emerging photographer on the cusp of greater national and international recognition, having exhibited in Colombia, the United States, and Japan.
