Ricardo Cárdenas describes his sculptures as drawings given volume in space. His work is inspired by the striking similarities between engineering structures and the meaningful lines and geometric shapes found in nature´s forms. Cárdenas has a unique background that has influenced the tone and definition of his artistic practice. Previously a civil engineer with a master´s degree in manufacturing engineering, his knowledge of metal manufacturing has given him a unique approach to how he creates his work. He stresses the the repetitive process of drawing over and over again, altering and improving each composition until he comes closer to his final idea: an abstraction of the original idea that sprung from nature. For Cárdenas, the selection of what materials to be used, be it with aluminum, plastic, or stainless steel, is absolutely fundamental to his artistic practice. Cárdenas has exhibited his work in the Museum of Modern Art of Medellín, the Museo Santa Clara in Bogotá, the Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lima, and across galleries in South America and the United States.
