Between Travels and Tensions
Works by Guillermo Cárdenas
January 28, 2017 - February 24, 2017 Cra. 16 #86A-31, Bogotá, Colombia
Beatriz Esguerra Art is pleased to present Guillermo Cárdenas’ solo show “Between Travels and Tensions,” a collection of his latest works in drawing and collage.
Cárdenas constantly explores notions of time and space through his body of work. Most recently, his artistic practice has investigated his personal relationship with the places and elements that surround him. As he does so, he places himself within his work in an autobiographical manner, drawing and painting those objects and places where he finds a part of himself. Using a play on words and colloquial language to give his pieces titles, Cárdenas proposes the plurality of senses that certain objects can come to obtain.
The threads depicted figuratively here represent the tensions that have long been inherent in his work. They are the support thanks to which relationships survive, even despite the existence of certain dark truths, or, as he often references, dirty laundry. The threads symbolize the bonds and connections that, while at times become fragile, must remain resilient. As Cárdenas himself states, “It is important […] that the connections, the threads […] that keep us together, be strong.”
