LUIS CARLOS TOVAR AT THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART OF ROME
Cartographies of Escape
Exhibition and book launch
Luis Carlos Tovar's book Cartographies of Escape was launched this past Wednesday December 7 at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome (MACRO). The project of the same name will be on view at the MACRO as the winner of the VIII IILA Photography Award during FOTOGRAFIA – Festival Internazionale di Roma 2015 / 2016.
“Cartographies of Escape is a project about freedom, the freedom of movement. It recollects the escape routes, testimonies, songs and footprints of nomadic Africans in Rome. Using these maps I extended my artistic residency for nearly a month and a half in the Mediterranean between Civitavecchia, Palermo, Arigigento and Lampedusa. I questioned myself about the act of inhabiting, and of understanding it as a way of existing in a place yet also approaching it as an ideological and aesthetic act. Doing so can be an assertive way of reflecting upon how art is always a channel of reflection for relevant themes within a determined context.” See More
