Fragments of natural fabrics, needlework, etchings, texts, gold paper, lights, and shadows bring to life a group of mainly abstract compositions that make visible the complexity and duality of our very existence. More so, Chavarro's works open up the possibility of reuniting with the "Self" and the "Everything" with calmness and, eventually, silence.
LISTENING TO SILENCE
By Constanza Ontiveros*
Is it possible to perceive beyond silence? Colombian artist Angélica Chavarro invites us to quiet the ever-present noise of the mind and uncover the textures, vibrations, layers, and whispers that hide in plain sight.
Chavarro's works result from an introspective journey, which led her to view her artistic practice as a self-conscious ritual. The artist's every trace, movement, and stitch both reveal and conceal the doubts, experiences, and creative outbursts associated with her existential quest. Although Angélica's works have a minimalist air, they are also abstractions of her life story, bringing forth her academic background and knowledge of ancient self-discovery traditions and techniques. Furthermore, her pieces, formally connected through overlapping layers of textures and colors with varied frequencies, escape all definitions; they, instead, beckon us to look with our eyes, spirit, and instinct. This is evident in the artworks constructed with gold paper and light, materials traditionally linked with the divine but that here seem to emphasize, with the help of embroidery and varied organic fibers and applications, the interaction between what we are and what we selectively let others see about us. The latter also transpires in the works constructed with pieces of fabrics, threads, and texts that Angélica intuitively arranges in organic patterns that act, in her own words, as landscape views of her thoughts.
Without a doubt, her two-dimensional compositions are part of a harmonious weave of colors linked together by the intuitive hand of Chavarro, who has turned her art into a contemplative practice expressed through the universal language of needlework. Through her artworks, Chavarro dares us to follow her lead. To stop and look at each of the works' layers, fibers, stitches, and applications; to feel and hesitate; to inhale and exhale; and, finally, to listen and embody all that lies beneath silence.

Angélica Chavarro earned her Master's Degree in Visual Arts. After her academic studies she developed an interest in self-knowledge and personal development and trained as an instructor in meditation techniques, including yoga and kundalini, among others. Following this path, after a brain surgery in 2016, she discovered a meaningful bond between her creative process and her concerns about the relationship between body, mind and spirit. Since then, she has been particularly interested in a visual approach to the issues of mindfulness, dimensions of thought and meditation, principles that guided her inquiry into the psychological dimension of art as a contemplative practice and as a channel for spiritual expression.
Her most recent work puts an emphasis on the mental attitude of viewers when facing the works, underscoring today's need for self-observation and silence to acknowledge the essence of our being, drawing the conclusion that the world is in irrefutable need of spirituality. In her most recent solo show, Silence's Intentions (Onsite Installation - FUGA 2019) she laid out a space that referenced the stages of meditation, offering a sensory experience to the visitor.
Her inquiries and her reflections make use of different media and practices, such as painting, drawing, installation and onsite intervention. She has taught creation workshops and she is currently devoted to her artistic practice.
Her work has been shown in her own country and abroad, in individual and group shows, in museums and galleries
