The Concert – Birds of Macondo draws inspiration from a personal experience in Ciénaga, where a tree overflowing with birds sparked the idea for this painting. The image of that tree lingered, becoming an obsession that demanded to be brought to life on canvas. This visual memory intertwined with Gabriel García Márquez’s description from One Hundred Years of Solitude.
“The concert of so many different birds became so disturbing that Úrsula would plug her ears with beeswax so as not to lose her sense of reality.”
In this painting, the trees form an orchestra of magical sounds, with each tree representing the unique voices of different birds: the tree of hummingbirds, the tree of ducks, the tree of seagulls, and the tree of swallows. The visual arrangement is designed to evoke not only sight but also the sensation of sound—transforming the scene into a vibrant, living orchestra.
The composition features three main trees in striking shades of pink and magenta. Their design is inspired by the botanical arrangements of the Dallas Arboretum, adding a contemporary botanical influence to the scene. Together, the vibrant colors and dynamic birdlife create a painting that captures both the visual and auditory essence of nature, echoing the magical realism of García Márquez’s world.
Lastly, a unique detail adds a layer of literary symbolism: the tree of iguanas. This element references the novel’s central couple, who, as cousins, feared that their union might result in offspring resembling iguanas—a motif representing superstition, fate, and the complexities of human connection within the story.
As always, a hidden jaguar can be found among the treetops, adding an element of mystery and discovery for those who observe closely.
Additionally, the painting integrates a barcode—subtly embedded within the composition. Look at it from different angles, and you will discover the barcode lines interwoven into the scene, adding a layer of hidden meaning and inviting viewers to decode its significance.
Care Instructions:
● Display the sculpture away from direct sunlight and high-intensity light to prevent fading.
● To clean the sculpture, wear gloves and gently use a cloth. If necessary, slightly dampen the cloth with a little water. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the painted surfaces.
● Avoid placing your hands directly on the glass surfaces to prevent fingerprint marks. If contact is made, clean gently as instructed to maintain the sculpture’s appearance.
● Ideally, place the sculpture against a white wall (it enhances its design and color).
● Ideally, place a light focusing on the Main Color tree (it enhances its color).
